What is the advantage of sodium-ion battery working at low temperature?

Low-temperature discharge behaviour, application scenarios and what to verify before a bulk order.

Full article

As the balkonkraftwerk and home storage market grows fast across Europe, battery low temperature performance has become one of the most critical factors for European buyers. Winter temperatures in many European regions can drop below zero, which will greatly affect the discharge performance of traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Sodium-ion battery shows its unique advantage in low temperature environment. Normally, a well manufactured sodium-ion cell can retain more than 85%–90% capacity at −20 °C. Even at −30 °C, sodium-ion battery can still maintain stable discharge output.

By comparison, lithium iron phosphate battery will see obvious capacity drop under zero degree. In cold winter European areas, low temperature will reduce the daily available energy of balcony storage kits.

That is why more and more European balkonkraftwerk distributors start to test and adopt sodium-ion modules for their storage kits.

Application scenarios

Where this engineering point matters

  • European balcony power plant (Balkonkraftwerk), especially for central and northern Europe cold areas.
  • Outdoor off-grid solar storage system for high latitude regions.
  • Winter outdoor commercial energy storage projects.

Note for buyers

Low temperature performance differs between different sodium-ion cell manufacturers. Before bulk order, it is suggested to ask your battery supplier to provide official low temperature test report for verification.
