What BMS protocol for sodium-ion storage system, CAN or RS485?

In-depth protocol guide: CANopen vs Modbus RS485 baud rates, inverter handshake registers (Deye, Goodwe, Solis), and multi-module addressing.

Full article

In any grid-tied or off-grid sodium-ion energy storage installation, the battery management system (BMS) communication protocol determines how accurately the hybrid inverter monitors state-of-charge (SOC), commands charge/discharge current limits, and enforces safety cut-offs. Integrators frequently ask whether to deploy CAN bus or RS485 communication.

1. CAN Bus (Controller Area Network): Highly recommended for closed-loop inverter integration (such as Deye Sun20K, Goodwe, Solis, and Victron). Operating typically at 500 kbps (or 250 kbps), CAN provides differential signaling with hardware-level arbitration and automated error checking. It delivers millisecond-level telemetry response, which is crucial for instantaneous current throttle commands during high PV surge conditions.

2. RS485 (Modbus-RTU): Best suited for local monitoring, SCADA systems, remote IoT gateways, or secondary diagnostics. Modbus-RTU over RS485 runs at 9600 or 19200 baud, making it resilient over long cable distances (up to 1,200 meters) between battery banks and plant monitoring computers, but with lower polling frequency.

3. Multi-Pack Master/Slave Architecture: In high-voltage series configurations (such as our 576V 170Ah system) or multi-cabinet parallel arrays, JSTARY POWER implements a two-tier protocol hierarchy: internal RS485 handles high-speed cell-to-pack inter-module balancing telemetry, while the master BMS unit bridges via CAN 2.0B directly to the hybrid inverter.

4. Sodium-Ion Voltage Curve Calibration: Unlike LFP, sodium-ion cells display a progressively sloping voltage curve from 3.95V down to 1.50V (or 2.85V to 1.5V depending on cell variant). Our proprietary BMS firmware integrates dynamic Kalman filter algorithms rather than simple open-circuit voltage lookups, ensuring SOC calculation accuracy within ±2% throughout the discharge cycle.

Application scenarios

Where this engineering point matters

  • Hybrid inverter communication matching (Deye, Solis, Goodwe, Growatt, Victron Energy).
  • Multi-cluster series and parallel battery bank integration.
  • Industrial SCADA and remote cloud monitoring via Modbus-RTU.
